Diabetes Education Course for Support Staff – March 12 March 12, 2020 9:00 am The Diabetes Education for Clinical Support Staff is an educational program that aims to improve the delivery of diabetes care by enhancing the skills and knowledge of clinical staff that supports the care for individuals with diabetes. The program is based off the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) Self-Care Behaviors and consists of a comprehensive review of healthy eating, physical activity, monitoring blood glucose, and medications as it relates to diabetes care. The post test is completed at the end of the session. Upon successful completion of the course and passing of the post-test, participants will receive a certificate of completion from Emory University School of Medicine. Target audience includes Registered Nurses, Registered Dietitians, Licensed Practical Nurses, Medical Assistants, Certified Nursing Assistants, Health Coaches, Community Healthcare Workers, Public Health employees and students. This activity is approved for 8.7 continuing education hours by the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC), and 6.5 continuing education hours by the Commission on Dietetics Registration (CDR). Date: Thursday,March 12 Time : 9:00 am – 4:00 pm Location : Emory Faculty Office Building Cost : FREE OBJECTIVES Demonstrate knowledge of Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes. Describe the complications of diabetes and identify steps to care. Gain insight on healthy eating strategies diabetes patients need to know to successfully manage their disease. Understand recommendations for physical activity, monitoring, and tips for working with patients to set appropriate goals. Get the facts on the various medications used for diabetes management and some basic strategies to help patients take medications safely. Gain a comprehensive understanding of how to help patients stay safe and, hopefully, prevent complications. Recognize the importance of an interdisciplinary diabetes care team. Demonstrate a skill set to aid patients in diabetes care with the use of the plate method, exercise bands, and blood glucose meter. Describe the AADE7 self-care behavior framework as a guide to the delivery of diabetes education.
